Dyslexia Symptoms: EFT for Developmental Dyslexia: Part 2 : EFT Tapping Script

Dyslexia Symptoms: Sequencing

Last month we looked at what developmental Dyslexia actually is - a physical developmental issue with observable differences in the brain.  This month, we're going to look at one of the dyslexia symptoms that come up commonly: sequencing.  Whether you're dyslexic or not, you probably know that dyslexics have problems with sets of instructions more than 3 steps long.  They become confused, which may be a side product of their very useful mathematical knack of intuitive leaps.  The dyslexic mind jumps from the problem to the solution subconsciously, so they're not too hot on doing things step by step.  There are studies on this, so if you're interested, leave a comment and I'll let you know how to find them on the net.

EFT and Dyslexia Symptoms Case Study - Specific Events

This month, we're going to take a look at the second session in the Dyslexia case study.  In this session the client focused on two specific incidents involving two teachers at school.

The client was a young woman in her 20s who was diagnosed with Dyslexia after she left school.

This incident will be familiar to many dyslexics - a maths class where she was not being given the marks for correct answers, because she couldn't explain the method she used to arrive at them.  "Intuitive leap" was not an acceptable method at school.

As a result, the client had constructed an elaborate method for arriving at an incorrect answer to any given mathematical problem.

So, in essence, she was being given good marks for arriving at the wrong answer.  When she got the answer right, she got zero marks.

No wonder she was confused!

Tapping Script

This script is based on the EFT shortcut method - you can find a video demonstration of how to tap in this post.

Here's a - very global - EFT script you can try if you've had similar experiences:

First take a SUDS level* from 0-10 on any incident in school when you had an issue with a teacher about the working out of a maths problem.

Setup:  "Even though I get more credit for being wrong than for being right, I deeply and completely love and accept myself"  - Say that three times while tapping on the Karate Chop point

EB: I get more credit for being wrong

SE: I get no credit for being right

UE: And it's so frustrating

UN: I feel so angry and confused

CH: This anger and confusion

CB: This anger and confusion

UA: And I feel so upset

TH: Other people get credit for being right

EB: And I have to be wrong!

SE: I have to be wrong to be right!

UE: That's just not right

UN: It's wrong to be right for being wrong

CB: And confusing

UA: And I hate it!

TH: I want to be accepted for being right, not wrong!

EB: But I'm not at school now

SE: I'm my own boss

UE: I wonder if I can accept myself now for being right ...

UN: ... and having the right answer MY WAY ...

CB: Letting go of all those old teachers

UA: Letting go of the emotions connected to those teachers

TH: Letting go of the need to please my teachers by being wrong

EB: Letting all of those teachers and their emotions go right down to zero

SE: Just like the marks they gave me for being right

UE: I CHOOSE to be accepted for being right

UN: I CHOOSE to have answers that work for me

CH: I CHOOSE to accept myself as I am

CB: And do things my way

CB: Because my way works for me

UA: And it's who I am!

TH: I choose to be who I am and enjoy it!

Now take a long slow breath ... hold it ... and let it go.

Take another SUDS level*.  If it hasn't gone down to below 3, try the tapping round again until it has.

If this looks like a fit for you, contact me using the link at the top right of this page - if I can't help you, I'd be glad to find one of my contacts who can.

Let me know how you got on in the comments below.

*A SUDS level is a method of measuring your personal discomfort on a scale of 0-10.  0 is absolutely fine, while 10 feeling the most frustrated/angry/frightened/other emotion you can imagine.

Dyslexia definition

Dyslexia is a developmental condition, often inherited, that interferes with the acquisition and processing of written language (MedicineNet.com, 12/9/2003). It is also a neurological condition in which the brain of the dyslexic shows distinct differences from “normal” children (Gabrieli, 2009). Currently, the academic consensus seems to be that Dyslexia is an Autism Spectrum condition, which is apparently taken for granted in most studies, although Humer and Mann (2010) distinguish dyslexics as a group from Autism Spectrum participants in their study, so this consensus may be changing.

By contrast, Ronald D Davis in his book “The Gift of Dyslexia” (1997) indicates that Dyslexia is a gift that allows those with the condition to perceive the world in ways that “normal” people cannot: the gift of Dyslexia, argues Davis, is the gift of genius.

Although this practitioner might take issue with Davis’ assertion, since not all dyslexics can be geniuses, she was interested in his description of what Dyslexia is from the point of view of someone who actually is dyslexic and the issues outlined by Davis in the first two chapters of his book (Davis, 1997).

From Davis’ point of view, Dyslexia is not a problem with reading and processing per se, but an entirely different way of experiencing the world. According to him, dyslexics have a multidimensional perception that results in their visualising, to a greater or lesser degree, the inside and the outside of anything and everything they come into contact with – people, houses, cars, animals, tables, clouds, toys, the ground under their feet etc - resulting in a greater or lesser degree of constant disorientation. Their “mind’s eye”, far from being anchored as it is in “normal” people, darts about in an uncontrolled and uncontrollable manner, examining everything from all sides and all angles (Davis, 1997).

Dyslexia: decoding information in the modern world

According to Davis (1997), In terms of reading, this disorientation, caused by the mind’s eye’s attempt to see all sides of the printed text at the same time, results in the experience of print being raised off the paper or screen, constantly changing shape and orientation, together with constant shifts in the relationship of any one letter shape to any or all of the others. Little wonder, then, that dyslexics have difficulty “processing” information. Written information in the modern world is, according to Davis (1997), not presented in a way dyslexics can decipher.

Articles on Gary Craig’s Emotional Freedom Techniques website (now transferred to EFTUniverse.com) indicate the EFT approach can be very effective in dealing with Dyslexia (Using EFT for Dyslexia, undated). However, what is, according to Davis (1997), “normal” and therefore unremarkable for a dyslexic, ie the disorientation, has not been addressed in these articles.

Dyslexia: Fiona McCallion's approach

In view of the above, therefore, I approach EFT for Dyslexia from the point of view that Dyslexia is not simply a reading and processing condition, but an Autistic Spectrum Disorder with associated issues.

Find a job with EFT

find a job top image
find a job top image

Find a Job in Any Economy With EFT Tapping

When you're hoping to find a job it really doesn't matter what unemployment rates are currently running at.  In Spain right now, unemployment is around 28%, while in the UK and USA it's just under 5%.  Millions of individual and family stories of unemployment, stress, anxiety and financial consequences are just as valid, whatever the unemployment statistics say.

How EFT Tapping Can Help You Find a Job

EFT is a completely different approach to finding a job.  There’s a fair amount of baggage you bring with you to every job search and that you take with you from every job.  With EFT you’re able to clear out this old baggage, leaving you free to allow your gifts and talents to flow from your heart.  When you do this, things start happening: opportunities you would never have noticed catch your attention; friends contact you with suggestions; sometimes you even open a newspaper or visit a website and there’s your perfect job.

opportunities find a job image

You are already doing the best you can in the way of applying for jobs, networking and contacting companies on spec.  However, the way you look for a job, your beliefs about the process, your emotions around it and even the way you left your last job all build up to form blocks to moving forward into the position you want.

I’ve put together a little tapping script for you to try as a start if you’re currently looking for a job.  It won’t do any harm to do it even if you’re not looking at the moment – nothing like being prepared for the next time!  Obviously, this little script isn’t going to solve all your problems all at once.  Finding a job using EFT is a process.  It should, however, loosen things off a little and give you a glimpse of how some focused work with EFT can help you dramatically with finding your new position.

Release Resistance to Finding a Job | EFT Tapping Script

Start by saying out loud: “It’s impossible to find a job in this economy”.  How true is that for you on a scale of 0-10, which 10 being “yes, that’s absolutely true” and 0 being “that’s not true at all”?  Where are you on that scale?  Make a note of that number now.

Then begin by tapping the side of your hand, saying:

“Even though it’s impossible to find a job right now – there just aren’t any, I deeply and completely love and accept myself”

“Even though there are no jobs out there, I deeply and completely love and accept myself”

“Even though I feel so anxious and stressed knowing there is nothing out there for me, I deeply and completely love, accept and approve of myself anyway.”

Eyebrow (EB):   There are no jobs
Side of the Eye (SE):  I’m looking for something that doesn’t exist
Under the Eye (UE):  It’s pointless
Under the Nose (UN): It’s depressing
Chin (CH): I feel so depressed with this job search
Collar Bone (CB): And it’s so stressful
Under the Arm (UA): I feel so anxious
Top of the Head (TH): I keep trying but it’s impossible

EB: There’s nothing out there for me
SE: There are no jobs
UE: There are no jobs for me
UN: There are jobs for other people
CH: But there are no jobs for me
CB: There are jobs for other people
UA: They find jobs, but not me
TH: I feel so jealous that they make it look so easy

EB: Still, at least if people I know have found jobs
SE: Then maybe there might be a job for me
UE: It’s possible there’s a job for me
UN: if there are jobs for them
CH: I know it feels like there are no jobs for me right now
CB: but I know that other people have found them
UA: It still feels impossible for me to find a job
TH: but I’m choosing to be open to the possibility that there might be

EB: I’m choosing to open up a little
SE: I’m choosing to be open to new possibilities
UE: I’m choosing to appreciate my own gifts and talents
UN: and let them flow out from my heart
CH: I’m choosing to bless those other people
CB: who have shown me that there are jobs out there
UA: I’m choosing to bless everyone who has a job right now
TH: Including me!

Then take a deep breath and measure how you feel with that statement again.  Repeat the script until the number is at least down to 3.

Use this script every day with your first cup of coffee to set you up for the day!

When you’ve tried the script, let me know your reactions by leaving a comment below.

Reiki Meditation | Why Reiki Shares?

Reiki meditation top image
Reiki meditation top image

Reiki Meditation

You may think of Reiki as a separate part of your practice from meditation, however the act of "doing Reiki" is in and of itself a meditation - a Reiki Meditation.

Stay with me and think about this.  When we first learn Reiki, how do we experience it?  In a class we share Reiki in turns, slipping off into the "Reiki sleep" when it is our turn to receive.  Is that not a form of meditation?  As we feel the warmth of Reiki hands, we relax, zone out and ... there: Reiki meditation.

As we place our Reiki hands on our classmates, we too, experience the Reiki meditation effect.  As we give Reiki, we receive it, sliding off into that Reiki space - the meditative space, outside time, relaxed, turned off and often in receipt of inspiration and guidance.

Reiki Meditation as a Rebellious Act

In a world where Reiki is considered a bit “out there”, the daily practice of Reiki is an act of rebellion. To take an hour out of the day to be with oneself to “do Reiki” is an oddity from the outside. There is so much to do in this modern word of ours: work, media, personal music players, mobile phones, shopping, internet – there barely seems enough time in the day for all the normal day to day activities we fill our lives with, never mind an hour of Reiki meditation – every day!

I’m a bit of a stickler for Reiki meditation. The daily hands on practice brings such rewards in every area of life: it brings clarity about our relationships, work, activities, encourages to grow past our limitations in ways that make us different to our peers and families and it is a time out to just be for a while. A meditation in which we let go of all distractions and face our inner selves, whatever that turns out to be. And I think that it is this that brings up the most resistance to daily practice – the experience of the inner self that many of us go through life without ever noticing.

Reiki Meditation and Daily Distractions

Daily distractions are designed to make sheep of us all – the great writer and sociologist Adorno, who wrote in the middle of the last century, described the distraction mechanism of life with its constant input of sounds, sights and associations that deaden the call of our souls: the outer world consisting of production (repetitive tasks at work with no real purpose) and consumption (shopping for stuff that we don’t really need and differs only in minor details from what we have already) cycles with very little purpose other than to distract from the condition of our lives and mute the call to purpose and spiritual growth. We don’t get a chance to experience the inner authentic in the noise of the outer world.

When we take time out to practice Reiki meditation, we begin to notice things. Things that are real, rather than the distractions of the outer world. We begin a process that can be quite uncomfortable at times. We notice things about ourselves, our relationships, our work and our lives that had been hidden by the busy-ness of our everyday lives. And once we notice something, the tendency is to whisper at first, becoming louder and louder over time until we can no longer ignore or hide it from ourselves.

Having been through the process, I can tell you that the changes experienced, the yearnings, the apparent chaos, these can be uncomfortable, but they don’t last. They lead you to great light and clarity in your life. As Reiki fills you with insight, it also fills you with purpose and the strength to make positive choices and carry them through. As the critical voice within becomes louder, so does the question “who says?”. The answer emerges: “I say this must change”.

The spiritual nature of Reiki brings us to our own authentic truth. It gives us the courage to make the choices we are not encouraged to make, but that are right for us.

Does this sound like a lonely journey? It can be and many people who have taken Reiki at 1st, 2nd and even 3rd Degree simply do not practice, preferring the distraction to the authentic – the distraction is familiar and safe, while the authentic is unfamiliar and therefore scary.

On the basis that you are actually doing Reiki, rather than some other thing described as “reiki” that really isn’t Reiki, the process starts when you make your first commitment. When you begin the process it doesn’t just stop because you refuse to practice, sideline it and reject the signs of change. Once attuned to Reiki, you are on the path and you can either be dragged kicking and screaming or surrender to the journey, asking Reiki to support you on your path.

Why Reiki Shares

We all need support in our rebellious Reiki meditation process. In sharing Reiki regularly, we are in community with like minded people, many of whom become our closest and dearest friends. When we fill at least one part of our lives with Reiki friends, we are building for ourselves a soft place to fall, a support network, a place of shared experience and a resting place of light and hope as those who travel with us and before us exemplify the fact that even the challenging times are showing us the possible. Reiki shares give us support, hope strength and healing on many levels. And they are essential to growth through Reiki if we want to make graceful progress.

At 2nd Degree, I insist that prospective students attend Reiki shares beforehand. Usually at least three, plus daily practice. This is not just because I am controlling and bossy – as a teacher this is part of my function – it is in order to give students their best possible preparation for the quantum leap in progress on their spiritual journey that 2nd Degree Reiki brings with it. It is for the benefit of the student that they practice daily and attend Reiki shares regularly, not the teacher.

If this sounds like what you’re looking for I can arrange classes in London, Glasgow and other places where there are enough students to make the travel worth while. I am comprehensive and thorough as well as demanding in terms of your time and what’s expected in order to be awarded your certificate. The fee is well above average, but in my experience, the value placed upon the class and its follow up is also well above average. If you prefer average, there is a lot of it out there to choose from. My classes are exceptional, however, and I invite you to rest in my classes, take sustenance and continue your journey refreshed and well prepared to take your Reiki gifts into the world as a blessing for yourself and those around you.

Reiki as a Spiritual Path

Reiki as a spiritual path blog post image
Reiki as spiritual path blog post image

Reiki as a Spiritual Path

For many years now, we’ve seen the spiritual aspect of Reiki kind of sidelined in favour of robust study-able aspects.  You know the things I mean – Reiki increases relaxation, reduces anxiety, helps wellbeing and so on.  All those things are measurable, as are things like the effect on the autonomic nervous system.

In truth, we’ve been trying to go mainstream and to talk in mainstream language.  And it’s worked to an extent.  Reiki is in hospitals now, on campuses, on mainstream popular daytime television and even in national newspapers.

Reiki has come a long way since an obscure Japanese woman living in Hawaii first started talking about and teaching it.

I’ve been as guilty of not talking about Reiki as spiritual path as anyone else – I’m British and, well, it’s just not polite to talk about that kind of thing in Britain to anyone other than trusted friends, peers, mentors and students.  Let’s face it, talking about one’s spiritual path tends to put people off and make them think we’re a bit weird.  As a result, we’ve seen a massive growth in Reiki in – ta da! – the beauty and pampering industry.

It’s really very funny:  Reiki, as most people who have experienced it pretty much take for granted, is a great anti-ager.  Of course it is – it’s relaxing and anxiety reducing, for goodness’ sake.  So it’s become a major second “therapy” in massage, reflexology and beauty.  This is partly because it’s so easy to learn – the way Reiki is sold these days is that all you have to do is have the “attunement” and there you are, a Reiki practitioner.  You can get an “attunement” online, over skype, by DVD – and even by doing it yourself.  Really.  Do It Yourself Reiki.

It’s also partly because it’s easy to do – you just put your hands on someone.  Or near them, if you’ve been taught in the last few years.  Or think about them.  Or even just “intend” to think about them.  And, if the person on the receiving end doesn’t feel anything or notice a change, well, that must be them.  There are all kinds of phrases used to deflect personal responsibility away from the practitioner onto the receiver.  No doubt you’ve heard a few of them.  Or you might even have used some of them.

And it’s also because Reiki – and the people who practice it – is incredibly tolerant.  We pretty much accept that anyone who says they do Reiki is actually doing Reiki.  Which is not always the case, but that’s for another article.

But to return to the point.  Takata – the woman who brought Reiki to the West from Japan in the 1930s – said to her students “Reiki is from God” and “don’t be surprised if you find yourself going to Church more often”.  That’s pretty much all she said on the subject, because her students were all Americans and most of them were Christian.  Talk of spiritual paths to that audience might well have got her lynched or burned out even then.  It would certainly have rung alarm bells in those she was talking to and quite possibly blocked her ability to communicate her message.

However, the spiritual aspect of life in Japanese culture is such that, not only do chief executives take time out to write haiku, people would think there was something wrong with them if they didn’t.  Spirituality is a mainstream part of Japanese life, spoken about, written about, practiced and embraced in a way we just don’t here in the West.

But the secret is out.  The Church is beginning to notice that Reiki has a spiritual aspect to it that is not under the control of any traditional path, particularly theirs.  It doesn’t matter which church it is, they are all beginning to notice.  There is no point in trying to downplay that aspect of Reiki any more, because they have already detected it.

It is the spiritual aspect of Reiki that heals.

I have a lot more to say on this subject, but right here’s something for you to think about: this time on the planet is a time of spiritual revolution.  The fact that Reiki has exploded all over the world is a significant indicator that something is happening.  But so many of the new Reiki practitioners are completely unaware that Reiki has a spiritual aspect – they are told it is “energy” and they get the impression it’s kinda “woo woo”.  But the fact that it’s a spiritual path has not been taught along with the system.  We don’t mention it because it’s not quite polite and we’re not sure how it will be received.  It’s time we did.  So many newbies are “using Reiki” as a healing modality and wondering why they feel they’re missing something.

We need to come clean.  We need to be clear that when they commit to Reiki, our students are committing to a spiritual path, whether they want to or not.  There is no separation between the system and the spiritual, because the system is the spiritual.   Reiki is spiritual growth, connection with the divine, a path of light and an offering of love.

All the rest is a side product.

How to Overcome Fear With Reiki

There is so much going on in the world right now – the economy, protests and riots both at home and abroad, pollution, global warming, the list is endless. More personally, people are afraid of crime, violence, shootings – it can seem that no one is safe. Overcome fear with Reiki, and move past it into freedom of choice.

The media is full of stories of violence both towards the person and through war. Often people are advised not to read or watch the news. However, one of the ways a population can be controlled is through ignorance and it’s important to take a little time each day to read or listen to at least the headlines from a trusted mainstream source. The trick is not to take it personally.

Reiki can help with this. Preliminary research by MacKay, Hansen and McFarlane in 2005 (Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine) indicates that Reiki has a direct effect on the autonomic nervous system resulting in reduction in heart rate and diastolic blood pressure. Other, more recent, research (Bowden, Goddard and Gruzellier, published in the Brain Research Bulletin, 2010) suggests that Reiki reduces stress as well as helping relieve symptoms of illness.

Regular Reiki treatments, therefore, can help balance the autonomic nervous system.  In practical terms, Reiki can help you to let go of fear and begin to at least be able to think clearly again.

What is the autonomic nervous system? How Does it Help to Overcome Fear With Reiki?

The autonomic nervous system controls all the subconscious activities of the body, like digestion, heart rate, excretion and so on. It’s divided into two main parts: the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Which is all very well, but what does that mean?

The sympathetic nervous system is active. It controls and reacts to the Adrenalin responses of fight, flight and freeze. The parasympathetic nervous system is the complementary system that controls and reacts to times of rest and recuperation, allowing the body to sleep soundly, relax completely and restore its resources.

Obviously when these two systems are out of balance, the body either rests too much or is too active, on the alert for danger inappropriately.

In today’s world it is easy for the system to become “stuck” in the danger response: stress, worry, fear and anxiety take their toll on all of us, resulting in anything from road rage, through domestic violence to inexplicable eruptions of fear and anger, all of which are reported in the media. Add to that stressful jobs, dysfunctional relationships and worry about the economy and what is really surprising is that anyone functions at all.

Regular Reiki treatments, either from a practitioner or through self treatment, help bring the nervous system into balance, allowing appropriate rest, relief from stress and the kind of relaxation of mind and body that allows us to move through the world without taking it personally.
