How to Break Through a Weight Loss Plateau

How to Break Through a Weight Loss Plateau

You've starved. You've reduced your carefully calculated calorie count to far less than the recommended level for weight loss. And you've hit a weight loss plateau.

break through a weight loss plateau blog image

Nothing shifts it. Not more exercise. Not eating less. Not drinking more water - not even hot water with lemon. Nothing.

The scales stay stubbornly stuck in the same place, no matter what you do.

Welcome to the Weight Loss Plateau.

In this post you'll discover:

  • What that weight loss plateau really is
  • What it means to your weight loss journey
  • Suggestions that have been made to solve the problem
  • How to really fix the weight loss plateau issue - permanently!

This is famine mode.

You feel like you're walking across a desert, with the distant hills staying obstinately far away.

Your body, in its wisdom, has decided you are in a famine and has switched into a lower gear to preserve energy and ensure your survival

What a Weight Loss Plateau Really is: A Huge Red Flag

Back in 1982 - the last century! - a group of German scientists* suggested that the body has an inherited weight range that controls metabolism. Metabolism, they proposed, speeds up or slows down, depending on which end of the acceptable weight range the body is nearing.

They coined the term "set point" for this phenomenon.

EFT for Weightloss | Setpoint Weight | What's Wrong With Your Body

However, they also noted that environmental issues like type of diet, amounts consumed and the increasing use of medication can overrule this set point and cause the body to forget all about it or readjust it. Or possibly both.

Further, they suggested that when weight loss reaches a point that's less than the lowest weight in the set point range, the body assumes there's a famine, forgets all about set points and goes into survival mode instead.

Environmental factors overrule genetics - at least when it comes to weight loss.

Human history is full of famines. And they're still happening all over the developing world. right now as I write, there are famine warnings being issued in relation to South Sudan and Somalia.

break through a weight loss plateau setpoint weight vs survival

"Famine Mode" is More Important to Survival than Set Point

In the Developed World we have constant abundance: food, drink and pleasure in all its forms.

As a result, increasing numbers of us have bodies that have lost their set point.

Set point is less important in evolutionary terms than survival.

And yo-yo dieting just makes things worse. You lose the weight, end your diet ... and then put all that weight back on again. Or even more. Your body prepares for the next famine by slowing your metabolism. Permanently.

A weight loss plateau means your set point has been overruled and your body is now totally confused about what weight it is supposed to be. It's responding to your weight loss efforts as if there has been a famine ... and it's preparing for the next one.

This is a huge red flag. When your body loses its set point, that's an indication that you will never maintain that hard won weight loss permanently.  Unless ...

How to Reprogram Your Set Point

At the beginning of this century, set point theory was hailed as a breakthrough. Yay! Now we know why dieting can cause more problems than it solves.

So all we have to do is remind the body of what its set point is.

Unfortunately, no one seemed to be able to come up with a method of doing this.

The main suggestion to remind the body of its set point was exercise.

OoooKaaay ...

I do not like going to the gym. And I'm pretty sure you don't like it either. If you did, you probably wouldn't be reading this post.

However, let's examine the exercise suggestion anyway.

Did you ever watch "The Biggest Loser" on TV? It was a reality TV show where a group of people competed with each other to see who could lose the most weight.

You can't see me ... but I'm doing a whole lot of eye rolling here.

Basically, the show took contestants to a beautiful setting, fed them a carefully balanced highly nutritious calorie controlled diet and made them do a whole lot of exercise. They all lost 100s of pounds in weight over the series. Contestants were eliminated one by one, mostly for not losing enough weight, but sometimes because they were a pain in the ... neck.

In May last year (at the original time of writing - this post has been updated since then), the New York Times printed a follow up article about scientific research on the people who took part in Series 8 of The Biggest Loser. After eight years, their metabolisms were still in famine mode, preparing for the next food shortage.

When they ended their time on the show, contestants had to eat less and exercise more to have any chance of maintaining their weight loss.

break through a weight loss plateau Set Point Weight - rather be fat

It's a fascinating article. Read it here.

So what does this tell us?  It tells us that exercise does not have any effect on set point.

What's the Answer? How to Break Through a Weight Loss Plateau

This is all very interesting, Fiona, I hear you say - but also depressing. So now how about some good news?

How do I stop my body slowing its metabolism during weight loss - or bring it out of famine mode when it's already decided all this weight loss is a threat to my survival?

Your body can be reminded of its healthy weight set point. It's not hard or complicated, but just requires that you find out what that set point is ... and then remind your subconscious of it in clear terms.

How do you remind your subconscious of your set point?

You may have heard of EFT Tapping - it's a popular self help tool that can be used, among other things, to kick start your weight loss, reprogram your set point, release resistance and recognise that cravings are your body's way of saying you deserve a reward.

As a method of reprogramming your subconscious, the way I use EFT tapping is hard to beat - it's fast, effective, easy and you can experience results straight away.

Effortless Weight Loss - Fiona, you've hit gold with this I think. Thank you!
... Found myself eating less too, for instance I went on holiday and had lots of meals out. It was the first time ever I haven't been able to clear my plate ...

Effortless Weight Loss is my program to get you started now and you can find out more about it here.

Takeaway - Break Through Your Weight Loss Plateau
  • Weight set point is a "softer" inherited factor than survival
  • A weight loss plateau is an indication your body has switched into famine mode
  • Famine mode is permanent, unless you reprogram it
  • Exercise is great - but it doesn't reprogram your set point
  • You can reprogram your body to co-operate with you again with Effortless Weight Loss

Let me know if you've hit a weight loss plateau and if you've overcome it in the comments below.

* I couldn't find the original source for this assertion - it's old, written well before everything was online.  However, this peer reviewed article and its references are most enlightening should you require further reading about the existence of set point and its effects.

New Year Resolutions Tap a Long | How to Keep Your New Year Resolutions

new year resolutions image

How To Keep Your New Year Resolutions Easily | New Year Resolutions Tap a Long

Happy new year!

And happy new year resolutions!

You know the drill: every year we make a list of the things we want to change in our lives - and really mean to make those changes!

But by the end of January, all those good intentions are relegated to the past with the old year.

But this year can be different.

New Year Resolutions Tap a Long

The Problem with New Year Resolutions

new year resolutions image

Enthusiasm for a new year, new broom, so to speak, is that nothing has really changed.  Nada.  Not a thing.  You are still you.  Your habits are still yours.  And your reluctance to step out of your comfort zone is still as strong as ever.

New year is just a day.  It may also be a hungover day.  Or a bloated from all those Christmas treats day.  Or both. Or worse.

I remember the new year when it was "broke up with my boyfriend" new year.

And it's the middle of winter, unless you live in the Southern hemisphere.

So you can see why New Year really just makes you want to curl up with the duvet over your head and mutter to yourself about starting next week.

How to Solve the Problem With New Year Resolutions

People who actually manage to make new year resolutions and keep them have a trick or two up their sleeves.

Here's how they do it:

  • They start with small changes and build on them
  • They prioritise, rather than try to do everything at once
  • They set themselves small milestones on their way to their final goal
  • They persist
  • They don't let one failure or obstacle get in their way.

Start with small changes

The most popular new year resolutions refer to weight loss and exercise.

Both of which can attract enormous goals.

The truth is that going from coach potato to marathon runner in a few weeks just isn't going to happen.  And that's why gym memberships rise dramatically at the beginning of January ... and then fall off again by the end of the month.

If you're a coach potato, by which I mean you do the kind of exercise involved in walking to the bus or train station on the way to work, start with adding a 5 minute walk at lunch time.  This will clear your head, allow you to explore the local area and give you more energy for the afternoon at your desk.

In the dark days of winter, getting a little extra sun, no matter what the weather, may also improve your health and wellbeing by way of additional Vitamin D.

new year resolutions weather image

After a while, you may find yourself resenting having to stop after 5 minutes.  So build on what you've achieved and add another 5 minutes to your walk.  And then another.  And another.

You can use this method to work up to your resolution, rather than setting yourself up for failure by trying to do it all at once.

There may be several areas of your life that you would like to improve.

Although diet and exercise are the top two choices for resolutions, others include spirituality, relationships, family life and work.

Choose your top three priorities, based on the effect they have on you and those around you.

For example, if you're unhappy and stressed at work, that is bound to affect the people you live with, your relationships and how you express your relationship with nature or the divine, or however you experience spirituality. So doing something about your job would be a priority.

What kind of "doing something"?  Think about what you want from your job: career path, a raise, a different job, for example.

Once you have clarity, set yourself small tasks to assist you.  For example: update your CV carefully, outlining your contributions to the company that indicate you're a "go the extra mile" kind of person; or do that same thing in a memo like outline and take it with you when you ask for a raise.

Smaller tasks allow you to measure your progress towards your final goal.

For example: updating your CV and/or your LinkedIn profile is a milestone.  These things are simple in concept, but require a bit of work in execution.  And, yes, I've had work through LinkedIn and so can you.

Each time you complete a task, give yourself a treat.  That may be catching up on a TV program you follow or a scented bubble bath or some other thing you enjoy.  Reward yourself for reaching these milestones.

And then on to the next one.

Let the whole of January come and go while you're working on your priorities.  Keep going.  Keep setting those small tasks for yourself, rewarding yourself for taking action ... and then through these small steps you will achieve your goals.

Obstacles and Failures

If your boss refuses to give you a raise, think about what it is you really want from your job.  Make a list.  Was his/her reason for not giving you a raise plausible?  If yes, then wait for a better economy/whatever and ask again then.  Don't give up.  Wait.

new year resolutions make a list image

If, on the other hand, your boss' reason was not plausible, think about what you want, write a list, update your CV and look for another job.  You may feel resentful at first, but think about it as an opportunity to work for someone who really appreciates you.  Or perhaps to set up your own business.

You may find this article and basic tapping script useful for finding a new job here.

The One Secret to #SuperCharging Your Resolutions

Of course, all the above depend on willpower - and willpower is notorious for draining away over time.

However, the addition of the EFT tapping sequence aimed directly at keeping your new year resolutions can supercharge your drive to achieve the goals you've set yourself.  Watch and join in with the video at the top of this post for a taste of what you can accomplish when you support your determination to change with this odd looking tool.

New Year Resolutions Takeaway

New year resolutions can be like pie crusts - made to be broken!   But putting these few tips into practice can ensure your success in the coming year.

  1. Aim for small changes and build on them
  2. Prioritise
  3. Reward yourself for small victories
  4. Persist
  5. Obstacles and failures are opportunities to rethink

Motivation to lose weight: Why you can’t lose weight and what to do about it

motivation to lose weight scale

4 Reasons You Can't Lose Weight and What To Do About It

Motivation to lose weight: Why you can't lose weight

Why You Can't Lose Weight

The motivation to lose weight can be very hard to maintain, particularly when you've often tried and failed before. Or when you've tried, done it ... and then put it all back on again.

Comes a point when you just give up, accept that you are the weight and size you are and you're stuck with it.

But the truth is that this is the best time to understand why it is that you can't lose weight - or keep it off when you have.

What's Wrong With My Body? Why You Can't Lose Weight - And What To Do About It

Hormones and weight loss

People tend to scoff when you say "it's my hormones". But your hormones have a huge effect on your motivation, metabolism and mood. You know this.

If you're under long term stress at work or at home, your body releases a type of adrenalin called cortisol, a hormone that affects their body shape. You show me an apple shaped woman and I'll show you a woman who has been under long term stress either currently or in the past

And the problem is belly fat tends to stick around even if the original stress has passed. Why?

Because by that time, your stress is about your body shape, but your hormones can't tell the difference between the original stress and the stress about weight gain, so it just keeps pumping out the cortisol.

motivation to lose weight stress image

But don't just believe me. A study of 6,700 nurses published in the International Journal of Obesity by Overgaard et al (2004) indicated that stress and its accompanying hormone changes - due to workload in the case of those nurses - is a major contributor to weight gain, particularly around the abdomen. So there you are.

It really is your hormones.

Anxiety and weight loss

Anxiety, a close relative of stress, also affects hormones.

Stress and anxiety tend to go together and as a result your body shape changes over time. The more anxious you are, the more it affects your hormones.

Weirdly anxiety can also result in weight loss. Ever heard the expression "she lives on her nerves" about a very thin woman? Yeah. That's the anxiety - and that's not healthy either.

Medication and weight loss

Sometimes it feels like you just can't win.

Many people do not understand that when you say "my medication makes me fat", you are telling the absolute truth.

But when you have a life threatening condition like diabetes, auto inflammatory disease or epilepsy, it's important that you keep taking the medication to keep you alive.

Anti depressants, birth control pills and antibiotics are also necessary for your health in certain circumstances

Unfortunately, that same medication makes you ravenous. All the time.

The reason farmers fill their animals with antibiotics? It makes them gain weight. It also makes you gain weight.

medication and weight loss image

And there's nothing like having a baby to make you gain weight.

Metabolism and weight loss

Some are born with a slow metabolism.

Some have slow metabolism thrust upon them.

Some people just have slower metabolisms than others. They are born that way. Which means that the "average" calorie intake for an adult tends to put weight on them.

Which is not helpful.

Alternatively, those who originally had average metabolisms and gained weight, lost it, gained it back again (and more) - known as yoyo dieting - tend to develop slower metabolisms through dieting.

Yep. A recent study from the National Institutes of Health on contestants from The Biggest Loser indicated that those who lose a lot of weight are more likely to gain most of it back and can even put on more weight than before they lost it.

The reason for this? Their bodies went into famine mode and never came out again.

What's the answer? How to lose weight

The answer lies in preparing your body through addressing your stress, balancing your gut and letting your body know that this is not a famine.

Stress can be reduced through gentle movement or stretching like yoga, Tai Chi or Chi Gung. Meditation can also help.

You can begin to balance your gut through adding a probiotic to your diet. My favourite is Bio Kult, but there are other brands. Make sure you choose one with many strains, rather than just one.

Living food can also help: bio active yoghurt, sauerkraut, kimchi and kefir are some examples of living food.

Add a fresh juice or smoothie to your diet. Not bought from a store, but made at home in your own juicer or blender. Fresh fruit and vegetables are incredibly nourishing. Nourishment tends to reduce hunger.

The Reason You’re Stuck – And What You Can Do About It Today | Plan Your Life

The reason you're stuck image

The Reason You're Stuck - And What To do About It Today!

You've seen how other people just seem to stumble across great ideas, opportunities, jobs, relationships, spiritual tools and career boosts. Maybe you've envied them their "luck". Do you think that's just for other people and not for you?

The reason you're stuck plan your life image

Here's one simple tip - something you can do today - to get the universe (or your subconscious, depending on your attitude) to open up and start conspiring in your favour, rather than against you.

Focus, not fantasy

focus not fantasy | plan your life children image

You know the old joke about the guy sitting on his porch watching the rain and refusing to be rescued, insisting that "the Lord will save me"? That's how most people live their lives. If they think about it at all, they have a fantasy that somehow the hand of the Lord will reach down out of the sky, pick them up and put them in the place they need to be in order to survive. They are completely blind to the way opportunities present themselves. They stay stuck in the same place until they die, wondering why nothing ever changed.

Your default abundance, happiness, career, income, whatever, instruction to the universe (or your subconscious, depending) is what you're getting right now. Which is great if you've a trust fund, but not so great if you haven't.

No matter how much you say affirmations, visualise or daydream about what you want, unless you notice and take action on the opportunities that come your way, you will get in the future exactly what you're getting right now.

Yet this one tip, simple as it is, can take your life into what you want for yourself, as quickly or as slowly as you choose.

Alright, already - share the tip, why don't you ...

So what now? Plan Your Life

Here is the one thing that you can do today to change what you're getting now to what you actually want:

Reason you're stuck | plan your life
  • Think about what you want to have done in 3 months, 6 months, 1 year and 5 years
  • Write it down
  • Put it where you can see it
  • Or put it in a drawer and forget about it, if you're not too fussed about how long it will take to arrive!

Taking action by actually thinking about what you want and writing it down in present tense statements lets the universe know that you're serious about wanting something different - you're taking action!

There's something about the connection between physically writing and your brain that activates the reticular activating system in your favour.  It lets your subconscious know that what you're writing down is important and that anything that leads you to your goal deserves your attention.

Which is how, in simple terms, affirmations work. The affirmation defines where you're going.  The reticular activating system lets you notice information about how to get there.

This lets the universe (or your subconscious) know what you want, when you want it and that you're paying attention.

You are paying attention, aren't you?

The universe will then start conspiring in your favour.  You'll find opportunities, serendipities and seeming coincidences happening all around you.  And all you have to do is take advantage of the ones you find most useful.

Your plan doesn't have to be elaborate ... and all you need is paper, a pen and a few spare minutes to invest in yourself.

I've even designed a Plan Your Life worksheet to get you started that you can download below.

Have fun!

Engage your Reticular Activating System!

EFT Tapping Recognised as “Evidence Based Therapy” For a Range of Issues

Evidence Based Therapy

EFT Tapping Accepted as an "Evidence Based Therapy"

EFT Tapping: Evidence Based TherapyEFT tapping Evidence Based Therapy Graphic

How cool is this? EFT tapping has now been recognised in the American Psychological Association (APA)  Journal Review of General Psychology as an "Evidence Based" therapy.

American Psychological Association

The following statement is to appear in the APA (American Psychological Association) Journal Review of General Psychology:

'A literature search identified 50 peer-reviewed papers that report or investigate clinical outcomes following the tapping of acupuncture points to address psychological issues. The 17 randomized controlled trials in this sample were critically evaluated for design quality, leading to the conclusion that they consistently demonstrated strong effect sizes and other statistical results that far exceed chance after relatively few treatment sessions. Criteria for evidence-based treatments proposed by Division 12 of the American Psychological Association were also applied and found to be met for a number of conditions, including PTSD.' (David Feinstein, press)

Basically, what this means is that rigorous academic investigation has indicated that EFT Tapping produces significantly better results than a placebo.

This week the States - next step: UK !

So What Does This Mean for EFT Tapping?

This is a major step forward in Alternative Therapies - no longer is EFT tapping banished to the sidelines as some "flaky new age practice", but it is recognised as a therapy that works by the above statement in a major mainstream professional journal.

A giant leap forward for all of us who practice and use alternative therapies not just on the basis that they're relaxing but also because in our experience they work.  Obviously, this doesn't mean that we can all start making claims for everything - that way lies serious problems with, among others, the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority).

What we can do, however, is tell our clients that this therapy is recognised as efficacious by the APA's own standards of research and then explain what that means with reference to the above.  Having tried this out today on a new client, the resulting astonishment and genuine pleasure expressed suggests that all clients will welcome this news.

Can't help myself - YAY!

Facebook Fanpage Tips and Tricks: Increase Facebook Page Reach for free

share facebook fanpage for free

How to Share Facebook Page for Better Organic Reach

Share Facebook Page ... with your friends first

If you're in business, a facebook fan page is essential.  Or at least, that's what they say.  Here's a basic tip for getting more likes on your page without breaking the bank: share facebook pages with your friends first.

Facebook is constantly changing their algorithm in order to raise more advertising revenue.  Which means that getting "likes" on your page for free is becoming more and more of a challenge.

If you're a coach, therapist, healer or alternative practitioner, marketing budgets are not as large as, say, IBM or Tesco

Facebook Fanpage Tips and Tricks: How to share facebook page with your friends

So you need to save your marketing budget for the things that really make a difference - like business cards, flyers, website hosting and consumables as well as advertising.

This video shows how to get started populating your facebook fan page - with the people who you know will actually be interested in it - your friends.

Not all your friends will "Like" your page, but enough of them will - they'll take the echo out of the emptiness.

Then you can get started on making your page the best it can be for the type of page it is.

Encourage your friends to "like" posts and comment on them - that will make your posts appear in their activities feed.  In that way their friends will be exposed to your awesome content and encourage them to like your page, too.

Subtle but effective.

What is your business? Who do you want to become?

What is your business

What is your Business?  Who do you want to become?

What is your business?

When you think about what you do for a living, do you think about it as a job? Or a business?

It doesn't really matter whether you are someone's employee or in business for yourself, what you believe about what you do for a living is how you are perceived by your customers or colleagues.

That may seem a little harsh, but let's take a closer look at it:

A Disney executive noticed that little girls came to their live shows dressed as princesses.  No child came dressed as the Wicked Stepmother or the Ugly Sisters.  Nor did they come dressed as the palace servants or soldiers.

They came as what they wanted to become: princesses.

Disney provided them with the experience of being a princess.

And what did that say about those little girls' carers?  In relation to their little princesses, were those carers servants?  Or kings and queens?

In terms of who your customers what to become, where are you in this scenario?  Servant? Or crowned head?

Servant or Monarch?

To take this analogy a little further, let's think about what the ruler of a kingdom does:

  • They have the power to transform lives, either positively or negatively
  • They have an overview of the kingdom and provide guidance to everyone in their kingdom based on that overview and their vision for the future
  • They think not only of themselves and what they can get, but also of the benefits to everyone involved
  • They take responsibility for their mistakes and share the credit for their successes
  • They teach and learn in pretty much equal measure, sharing their knowledge and experience freely  in return for value

What does a servant do?

  • They have a closely defined job description
  • They have a defined salary, which they get paid whether they do their job well or badly
  • They are at the mercy of their employers
  • They feel helpless and powerless in relation to in the wider economy
  • They often feel unappreciated and either unhappy or resentful (or both!)

Which Would You Rather Be?

I know which I would rather be.  And it really is a choice - I can see what I do as a job or as a business.

If what you do is a business then you need to plan your life, to create a vision for the future.

You need to understand how and why you can enable your customers to become who they want to be, encourage them, guide them, celebrate their transformation and only deal with those people who really want what you have to offer.

You need to give value in return for value.

Your plan must include:

  • A definition of your ideal customer
  • A clear vision of the experience you provide and the value of it
  • An income goal over six months, a year and 5 years
  • A marketing plan
  • An understanding of who you are in relation to your customers
  • Strong boundaries - the ability and a willingness to say "no" as well as "yes"
  • A network of like minded friends/colleagues to bounce ideas off, provide support and who are as enthusiastic as you are

Terrifying?  Well, yes, if you've always seen yourself as a servant, rather than a ruler.

Obviously, I use EFT tapping to help me to transform myself into who I want to be.

It's time for you to change your view of who you are, so that you can support your customers in their own transformation into who they want to be.

Make a plan.  Write it down.  Put it where you can see it.  You can start by downloading this pdf template to give you a place to start thinking about your business.

By the way, if you think it's impossible to become a king or a queen in your line of business, think about Margaret Thatcher, a grocer's daughter who became the British Prime Minister; Kate Middleton, an entrepreneur's daughter who will one day become Queen of Great Britain and the United Kingdom; Joan of Arc, a peasant who went on to lead a nation; Helen Keller, a deaf/blind mute, who changed the world for all deaf and blind people.

The list goes on.

Of course, they were absolutely determined.  But so are you.  All you need is a little help and a place to start - you can download this pdf template to begin your transformation now.

When you've used the template, let others know how it went by leaving a comment below.

EFT Tapping Side Effects : Driving

EFT tapping parallel parking image

EFT tapping side effects: A Main Street image

Learning to Drive Before EFT

If you’ve ever been in the car with me, you’ll know I have spacial awareness issues – it goes with the dyspraxic territory. As a result, well, I always had trouble parking the car – we call it “reverse parallel parking” in the UK. Trouble is, in order to pass the driving test in the UK, reverse parallel parking is one of the things you have to be able to do.

Eventually, I got to the stage I could do it – barely! Once only. Enough to pass the test, just.

So on the way to the test, my instructor was all “you should practice parking”. And I replied “Actually, I can only do it once, so I’d rather save that once for the test!” Passed (that time!) by the way 🙂

Until 2010, I was still able to park the car properly once only per day!

Kinda inconvenient, but, you know, we work around these things.

Parking – After EFT

For the last two years, however, I’ve been able to park the car brilliantly without even thinking about it!

Really. It just changed “overnight”!

You want to know why things changed?

It’s a weird one. The 2010 EFT World Summit changed my life – well parking the car, anyway 🙂

I just went out in the car and parked it without even thinking about it. In fact, I didn’t even notice until I’d done it a few times.

No sweatiness, no anxiety, no frustration. Just did it. Wow! That was huge for me.

And the best thing?

It was a side product of the whole tapping for 10 days thing.

I’d got so used to not being able to park properly that I didn’t even think about addressing that during the summit.

The 4th annual EFT World Summit has just opened for registration.

Click here to register. It’s a free event. And maybe, like me, you’ll have the kind of breakthrough you never even thought about!

I’m often asked: what does a life coach do? Well, Life Coaches help and support people through changes in their lives and help them to set and achieve their goals.

Make a plan, follow it, be successful. What could be easier?

The reason that people come to Life Coaches for help, however, is that they want to make changes in their lives, but find they keep hitting a wall somewhere. Often they have no idea why they hit the wall, just that they get to a particular place in their plan and … well, they might find they get distracted; or that their enthusiasm just disappears; they find excuses not to go any further; they maybe decide they didn’t really want to change after all … they discard their plan and go back to the way they were before. When this happens often enough, they begin to smell a rat. It always happens at a similar place in their plan, or in response to a particular event.

It’s a Life Coach’s job, to help the client to overcome these obstacles and change not just their outer circumstances, but also their inner landscape.

The Potato Race

When I was a little girl – a long time ago as you can imagine! – every year we used to have a school sports day. You remember those – egg and spoon races, sack races, potato races, relays etc. All the parents would turn up to cheer and the school used that day to interact with the parents, give out prizes and generally build relationships with parents in an atmosphere of fun.

Of course, any sports day had its stars – the kids who did well at sports tended to win all the races, compete with each other and generally shine in circumstances like that. Kids like me, who were never good at sports tended not to look forward to sports day but learned to be philosophical about the whole thing – after all, it was only one day of the year and although one got a hard time from parents for coming last, it was soon over and forgotten.

Most sports days have disappeared into wherever it is that memories disappear as we get older. However, one potato race on one sports day stands out in my mind. For those too young to remember them, here’s a quick explanation. A number of potatoes were allocated to each entrant. These vegetables were spaced out along the track and the object of the race was to run, pick up a potato, run back to the start, place the potato into a receptacle placed there for the purpose and then run back for the next one, until all the potatoes were in the bag. Then the runner picked up the bag and raced to the finish. Whoever picked up all their potatoes and crossed the finish line first won the race

Well, that particular race, goodness knows why, I had been entered. To cut a long story short, the field was uneven and, like many others before me and after me, I didn’t see the last potato, didn’t pick it up, lost my rhythm, made a big fool of myself and cried all the way home.

I suppose I was about 10 years old. I remember feeling mortified both because of the laughter and because I felt I had been stupid. I beat myself up about that for a long time.

Fast forward umpty tump years.

Projects as Potato Races

When you have a project to do, whether it is personal development, setting up a business, organising an event or any other kind of project, there are certain correlations between your plan and a potato race. Just like in a potato race there is a sequence to a project plan that has to be implemented in order for you to cross the finish line and achieve your goal – preferably on time and on budget.

But what if you overlook one of the steps, or come across a problem you hadn’t foreseen? What if your family don’t like the time or attention it takes? What if you make a mistake? Eek!

How do you deal with that?

Most of us, myself included, tend to go right back to the first time we came across that kind of problem. And do what we did then to solve it – which may well involve feeling mortified, running away and crying all the way home!

What Does a Life Coach Do?

A Life Coach – among other things - can help you understand those inner blocks, release them and change the way you react to them, permanently, so that you can continue implementing your plan and achieve your desired outcome.

So, for example, once I understood where my (almost obsessive!) perfectionism came from – that fear of feeling mortified again just like I did at age 10! – I could relax and let go of it, enjoy the process and achieve my goals easily, free of stress and struggle. And also free of beating myself up for being less than perfect!

So what goals are you going for … and what’s stopping you?
